6th January 2009 by Heart Burn No CommentsThe most common caused discomfort due to heartburn is the GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease). This happens when the cardiac sphincter doesn’t close properly and reflux action of food contents backed into the esophagus. There are no specific symptoms for heartburn. The symptoms are caused due to the secondary infection such as hiatal hernia. Even for patients suffering from hiatal hernia are not entirely affected by this burning sensation. To be exact 50% of the populations suffering from hiatal hernia are prone to the symptoms of the GERD disease. It causes esophageal cancer which is a malignant tumor of esophageal cells. Peptic ulcer might also be a part of the symptoms due to heartburn. A rare disorder of heartburn called Zollinger Ellision syndrome. This syndrome causes tumors to form in the pancreas and slowly protrude into the small intestine called the duodenum.

Symptoms such as gastritis are prone to occur due to the heartburning sensation. This gastritis generally causes inflammation of the lining in the stomach. If not treated on time then secondary infection of the intestine occurs. A minor disorder called gastroparesis, concerned with the stomach also occurs often. This is nothing but delayed emptying of the stomach contents causing gastrointestinal problems and acid refluxes. Another main symptom of heartburn is the Bowel syndrome. This occurs due to the dysfunction of the muscles controlling the gastrointestinal tract. This syndrome weakens the nerves that carry sensation to different parts of the body from the gastric tract. These motor nerves are generally said to be responsible for the functional abnormalities.
