What is Heartburn?

6th January 2009 by Heart Burn No Comments

The heartburn, so called pyrosis has nothing to do with the heart. This is not a heart disease as the name suggests. This corresponds to a burning sensation that is felt in the esophageal region near the breast bone. To be very specific a burning sensation felt in the lower region of the breast bone due to regurgitation of gastric acid. This sickness has many side effects which are very deadly indeed. Heartburn causes chronic cough, mimic asthma etc. a huge confusion generally prevails among the public that it is a heart sickness as this involves acid intrusion into the esophagus because of the problem in the cardiac sphincter valve. But most of the masses do not know the fact that the word cardiac corresponds to cardia as a part of the stomach and not with the heart. As suggested by professionals heartburn is a minor problem that almost people of all ages posses. It is not harmful unless it occurs several times.

When it occurs repeatedly it causes GERD disease (gastroesophageal reflux disease). When food enters the stomach the muscles should contract so as to digest the food contents. When this does not happen the food enters the esophageal tract and causes strain on the cardiac sphincter. People who are affected by hiatal hernia are prone to this burning sensation. The top part of the lower abdomen intrudes into the chest cavity through the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). This weakens the esophagus cavity and makes easy for acids to enter and cause its reflux.
